Meota/Jackfish Lake, SK

Following the wedding in Saskatoon, we all went further northwest to the village of Meota on Jackfish Lake. On my (David) mother's side of the family, there has been a tiny cabin in the family for over 55 years so it is a hugely popular summer place.

We had great weather a couple of the days and got rain on a few of the other, but it was a great 5 days of games, books, ice cream, and cheap golf (we played our first couple of rounds in a few years...ouch)

Stephen and Melissa's Wedding

The weather was beautiful in Saskatoon, SK on the morning of August 20th. Sunny and not much of a wind...which is a quite a miracle when it comes to Saskatchewan:o) The ceremony took place at 2:00pm and it was beautiful. Both of the dads officiated the ceremony which added a nice personal touch. David finished writing his song and it turned out really well.

The reception was held just outside the city at a place called "The Barn Playhouse". They had a BBQ and a dance. In all the day went off without a hitch (if you don't count the killer bees that were attacking the bridesmaids flowers during the picture taking).

Unfortunately, because of issues with green cards, etc, Jeremy wasn't able to leave the USA to come up to Canada. He and Erin had already bought their plane tickets, so Erin came anyways.
Thanks to technology these days, Erin and I were able to run a live video feed for Jeremy during the ceremony. Without being there in person, it was the next best thing for sure.

Melissa had all the details taken care of down to the "T" and everything was very beautiful. Check out the photo gallery to see the picture of the cupcakes they had instead of a wedding cake. They were really neat.

The reception and dance was a tonne of fun. Very laid back, country atmosphere (it helps when you're surrounded by wheat fields and big red barns). The DJ for the dance had just transferred all his music from cassette tapes to CDs for the occasion and only had music from the 60's, 70's and 80's. But let me tell you, the crowd did a mean Electric Slide.

Now the couple is off on a Carribean cruise for their honeymoon (and thankfully they just missed the hurricane Katrina on their way by).

Mom and Dad Thiessen's 30th Anniversary!

On August 16th, Mom and Dad Thiessen celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in style, spending the day driving around in a Mazda Miata before enjoying a gourmet dinner (prepared by Mo, Julia, and Dave).

CROSS CANADA - MONTREAL TO CARONPORT, SK

...Well, we had a great drive across the country to Caronport, Saskatchewan. We took our time getting here, leaving August 8th and arriving August 13th, camping in provincial parks along the way.

Other than trying to adjust our bodies to the freezing cold temperatures (it dropped to 8C one night) and a flat tire in Winnipeg, the trip was without incident. We live in a beautiful country - with the drive from Sault Ste. Marie to Thunder Bay being especially nice. For more specific details on the trip, you can click on the "continue reading" link below...

AUGUST 8 - We left Montreal and drove to Massey, ON...around a 10 hour drive (should have been 9 except for a wrong turn...don't ask). We stayed at a beautiful campsite near some rapids and a waterfall (check out the picture in the gallery).

AUGUST 9 - Massey, ON to Lake Superior Provincial Park (Rabbit Blanket campsite near Wawa, ON). Another good day, but the temperature sure dropped off at night. Lake Superior was a spectacular blue colour and we spent a good part of the day driving along its shores. We stopped off at one beach (Agawa Bay) to play around a bit but the water was way too cold to consider swimming in it. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO US!

AUGUST 10 - We drove a short day today (6 hours) to Thunder Bay where we stayed at the Days Inn and went to the Keg to celebrate our anniversary. Interesting drive...who knew that there were no McDonalds, only A&Ws between Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay?!? Thunder Bay was a neat town, and we were surprised to learn that it has the third largest port in Canada (after Montreal and Vancouver) with capacity to store over 100 million bushels of grain.

AUGUST 11 - Finally left Ontario today...we made it to a provincial campsite just outside of Winnipeg, about an 8 hour drive.

AUGUST 12 - We'd hoped to spend he day at Grand Beach, but it was flippin' cold and windy...so we looked around there a bit and spent the afternoon in Winnipeg in an area called "The Forks" (where a couple rivers meet, really cool markets and parks).................we got a flat tire there though so that delayed us a while. We made it out to Spruce Woods provincial park near Portage le Prairie for the night. And what a night. We ran out of propane in the middle of cooking Kraft Dinner, then got rained on as we tried to build a fire...but you can't stand between David and food for too long - supper was served at 10pm

AUGUST 13 - Before leaving Spruce Woods we went for a hike through some sand dunes there - it was crazy to come across a desert in the middle of southern Manitoba! We finished the last 7 hours of our drive to Caronport, SK, meeting David's Mom and sister for supper at Boston Pizza (for those of you in MTL who have never been, there are new ones opening up there soon...order the Chicken and Ham Stromboli sandwich and your life will never be the same)
