Behind the Times

I'm usually behind by a few months on most 'cool' trends. I like to wait and see how things shake out before I commit fully to being a raving mad lunatic fan of something/someone.

So it is with my recent purchase of The Killer's latest album as well as the CTV comedy, Corner Gas.

The folks over at u2log yakked about The Killer's album awhile ago but I didn't pay them any attention, figuring it was something only Europeans would understand. But then Carlos started talking about them as well, and wouldn't shaddup, so I figured I'd give the tune (All These Things That I've Done) he threw in my drop box a listen and later that morning I bought the album on iTunes. Very much liking it, though I'm kind of apprehensive about all the synth use on the album.

Uh for U2

The poopy stuff has hit the fans.

A $40 membership at u2.com for advance purchase of tickets that may or may not be there and now fans in the UK are told they are limited to the purchase of tickets for one show only and a maximum of 4 tickets for that show. I think everyone involved realizes in the grand scheme of things, it's not that big a deal. But it is very frustrating for some, especially those who've given a great deal of time and/or money and support to the band. Right now it's easy for me to not really care what's happening 'cause I won't be catching any shows on these legs of the tour, but I can still understand the level of frustration going down.

You can't really blame U2 though. I mean, this whole internet thing just kind of snuck up on them and how were they supposed to know it was going to take off like gangbusters?

Leo is right, it's more painful than funny really.

BitTorrent for Dummies

Here's how easy it is:

What bittorrent in effect does is allow multiple people to download a single file from a bunch of other people, all pulling data from the file in different spots. As people get more and more of the file, there are more and more people with data to pull from - but they don't have to have the complete file to download it as is the case with most peer-to-peer file sharing programs.

It's great for catching a show you missed or don't feel like staying up late to watch.

60 Years Since Liberation of Auschwitz

Dachau Camp
Dachau Ovens

It's the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. We had the opportunity to visit Dachau 5 years ago and that is where the pictures above are from. Having been at the site of a concentration camp, it is still very, very hard to fathom what exactly went on. And while the world talks of 'never letting this happen again', we have and continue to even today. Rwanda in 1994, Cambodia in the 70s and Darfur today as you're reading this, among many others I'm sure.

What do you do in the face of such evil from humanity? How do you respond? Most of us, have already answered that.

Nervous Much?

Poor guy got nervous being on TV is all.

Don't watch while you're eating lunch like I was, it may cause a chain reaction.

Let's Plan a Family Trip

So as some of you know, Sue's sister and brother-in-law live in Australia. As you also may know, Australia is not anywhere near Canada. Further, you may even realize that nobody is offering free teleportation devices to teleport instantly to Australia from Canada.

Which brings us to the fact that in April, we're heading down (via old fashioned aeroplane) to Australia for a month to visit, along with Sue's parents and her other sister and brother-in-law.

I'm filled with excited apprehension. Flying has long since lost it's novelty on me, and especially flying for 20+hrs. But I've never been to Australia and I hear it's a nice place.

In honor of our trip, U2 decided to announce their tour and declare that their only Canadian date thus far will be in Vancouver while we're gone. Stupid rich rock stars. (For any "hardcore" U2 fans that happen by, I realize that the tour is secondary to the illness in the U2 members family)

The More Things Change...

Woopsy Daisy

Well I had my first system meltdown in my 3+ years working on macs. I'm not sure what happened exactly but somehow my keychain (the thing that stores all your passwords/logins for websites and other programs) got wiped out as well as various apps (Mail, iChat, Newsfan) just wouldn't start.

What's really slick is that I had just done a backup using, aptly named Backup, and so I just had to reinstall the OS, install some programs and then fire up Backup and restore all my mail settings, mailboxes, internet bookmarks and history, preferences for _all_ the programs I had installed, my photos, documents, etc.

If I'd been really serious about backup, I could've been using Carbon Copy Cloner which is a free OS X app that makes an image of your hard drive that you can use to put absolutely everything back where it came from. I used that when I upgraded Powerbooks a few months ago and it works very slick.

One more reason to love using a Mac. :)

(Disclaimer: Yes there's probably something like this on/for WinXP. I think it's only on XP Pro.)

And it works. So now all you comment spammers can really go back to the hole in the ground you came from. Thanks and have a nice day.

Picasa 2 is out - it's still free and still the best photo organizer on the Windows side where they don't get iPhoto.

Go and download it now.

Tried out this technique for pictures.

It's easy to do an ok job of it (this took me maybe five minutes including taking the pictures and combining them in PS) but you'd have to do more planning/have a better camera/spend more time in PS to get it as good as the originals. Either way, it's still a neat idea for taking pictures.

MT Upgrade to 3.14

I just installed the Movabletype upgrade to v3.14. Any mennoboys or mennogirls that experience any issues, drop me a line.

Any Mac users out there who use Movabletype and are missing out on the shortcut link, bold, email, etc buttons on their entry page need to check out Firefox. Even if all you use it for is your blog entries, it's a good browser to have around. Something in the javascript support in Safari renders those shortcut buttons invisible.

Baby It's Cold Outside

Man is it ever cold out there.

Sue's making soup and I'm trying to fight off a cold.

Ever have one of those days where the thoughts in your head don't sound nearly as intelligent when you let them out of your mouth?

The recently announced Mac mini puts all other 'small form factor' computers to shame. Like a lot of Apple product, I have no direct use for it but I still desperately want one.

Macworld SF 2005

Update: The stream of the keynote is available now. Click here to avoid having to read my summary.

Steve Jobs is giving the big 'reality distortion field' speech right now, but Apple decided to not stream it live from the stage so you'll have to wait until tonight to get your fill.

There's lots of sites doing text updates. Here's what's gone down so far:

Home-ity Home, Jiggity Jig

We've made it back after two weeks in Mexico. You can click your way through the photos here on flickr if you like. I put about 60 up there so you've been warned.

It all came to an end so quickly, at least it feels like it did. When you first get there it feels like two weeks will go on forever, but then by the time we're heading to the airport outside Mazatlan it feels like we just got there. The trip home definitely took forever. First a delayed flight in Mazatlan, then again in Los Angeles. We got a 3 hour lay-over in Vegas so we took a cab and hit the strip. It's amazing how something can be so beautiful and so ugly at the same time. I had just finished reading Bringing Down the House, a Christmas gift from Sue, and so the Vegas mythology was in my head. I didn't see anyone carrying around wads of cash, but the minimum limits at some of the blackjack tables were enough to do your head in.

Speaking of Christmas gifts, I got a guitar from Jamie and Ives that's down at the condo. It's a cheap, old Mexican classical style guitar and it's nice to not worry about things being in tune sometimes.

We had a New Year's fire on the beach (I'm going backwards through my photos now) and some beautiful sunsets. We got to see turtles, dolphins, and a semi-pro baseball game. (I'm not sure how those three fit together) Jamie and Ives got set up in their new apartment and my parents got a new car ('86 Jetta for those keeping score).

We met Jamie's new family, I found my new office and saw the site of Sue's family's new condo.

Ives tried fire-spinning (without the fire), we tried some really fresh shrimp, and Jamie and Ives got some baby clothes.

Enough photo linking. You can figure out the rest on your own. It's both good and bad to be back home. Mazatlan always inspires us to think outside our regular lives and look at ways we can improve ourselves as well as the world around us. Part of the inspiration comes from the world around us (poverty mixed with much wealth and the beauty and friendly nature of the Mexican people) as well as from the books we have time to read while on vacation there. A good portion of the people in Mazatlan live on around $10US per day and are satisfied and surviving on that. Most of us make at least that in one hour and are scrambling for ways to make more. Imagine the good that could come from giving up either the struggle for money or your money for good. Sue and I talked about how two families/friends could live together in a house and give away one families' income to better the world.

The problem comes in forgetting all these things we are inspired by and settling back into a routine. With a trip to Australia coming up in 3 months, I don't know that we'll have time to get back into that routine. :)
