the local government didn't know what happened to the tree until they saw the show. they thought it was local vandals.

a post election ponder

a friend of mine had someone say to him "i don't know how you could be NDP and call yourself a christian?" now, this wasn't a dig at my friend. i don't think he'd ever say he was NDP 'cept to piss someone off. but what a statement to make. my question is; how can you, as a Christian, be in or support a specific political party? lets think about this. if i belong to/support a specific political party i am professing that they're social/moral/economic beliefs are my own. if i say i'm a liberal then people assume i believe what liberals believe. how can you do this and then say "and i'm a christian"? does the whole teaching of the Bible fit into the policies of the Liberals, the Conservatives, the NDP, the Greens, or the Bloc? i don't think so. what do you think?

(speak up fast, this is one of those "might get erased when i re-read it" posts. save this post, place a comment.)

today i voted for... no one. i placed an official vote of protest because i could not, in good concience, vote for any of our candidates. so i then have a question; is a vote of protest (no candidate selected) the same as not voting? they still check your name of the list and your ballot is still in the box, it simply doesn't support anyone.

Frank Lloyd Wright designed Falling Water in around three hours while waiting for the client to come to Taliesin from Milwaukee. This was after putting it off for three months. Yet another example of the magnificent creativity caused by procrastination.

no one to vote for.. everyone is either from the wrong party or they're the kinduv person you wouldn't want running your lawn mower. i'm so tempted to rant about canadian politics, but it's a waste of energy. oh jer, why does our solution have to be so simple and yet so complicated?

religion, n. - system of faith and worship (websters)

how often do we hear a cry in the church to do away with religion? why is this? do we not understand what religion is? perhaps the word has gained a christianese definition that does not match it's true meaning.

religion, n. - a daughter of Hope and Fear, explaining to Ignorance the nature of the Unknowable. (the Devils Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce)

since reading this post by The Armchair Theologian on searching for God, i have been thinking more about some of the attitudes i've seen and heard in the last few years from church goers. i (we) often hear people say they are looking for a place they can "feel God". i've often wondered what that means. are they saying that they are looking for real Christians, or are they saying that they can't feel God on the inside, so they're looking for Him on the outside?

i have no problem with people seeking out different worship experiences, but i do have a problem with people abandoning one church for another because at the new church they can "feel God". if you're in a church and you feel or see that it is lacking something, isn't it your responsibility to God and that church as a Christian in that church to address that problem. otherwise your actions must be somewhat self serving. if you are called to serve somewhere else that is good and we should follow those calls. but if we abandon our brothers and sisters in one place because another is "more like it is supposed to be", it seems to me to be pure selfishness. in this we do no service to the church we are going to, though perhaps the church we leave is better off.

yesterday at church, i have to say i wasn't terribly impressed with the service. it just seemed so slow. however sunday school saved the day (well morning.) we're doing some video series by rob bell. i know nothing about him or his church/propaganda, but the video this morning was very interesting. he addressed the idea of God's faith in us. it was interesting because one of my major frustrations with the current church climate is that we seem to need to put ourselves down in order to say how great God is. firstly, isn't God great enough that we don't need to belittle ourselves in order to worship His greatness? and second, even if we are fallen, as creations of God which He loves and has faith in, should we really be so self-deprecating? seems like we're insulting God's creation in order to worship Him without actually acknowledging or perhaps without understanding how magificent He really is.

well, i'm done the long december haul of nights. i have a few in january and at the beginning of february but nothing as dense as this past month. i have to say, i don't really remember much about december, though i think there was a holiday in there somewhere. now, obviously my blogging has suffered with the most exciting thing being a list of things i might buy (of which i bought none.. yet. the dead like me DVD's are almost a certainty). actually i quite enjoy the lyrics to "the inner light" by george harrison too. but, talking to wade and drew last night i felt inspired to bring forth something more substantial. i'll write up a list of questions when i wake up for you all to think about. until then, good night.. morning.. ah, forget it.

The Inner Light

Without going out of my door
I can know all things of earth
Without looking out of my window
I could know the ways of heaven

The farther one travels
The less one knows
The less one really knows

Without going out of my door
You can know all things of earth
With out looking out of my window
You could know the ways of heaven

The farther one travels
The less one knows
The less one really knows

Arrive without travelling
See all without looking
Do all without doing

lyrics by George Harrison
